Quilapayun - Chilean Folk

Quilapayun formed in Chile during the mid 1960s. It was one of the most influential exponents of the Nueva Canción movement. Quilapayun in unique in the fact that its music is in part inspired by the traditional rhythms of the indigenous Andean people. After the United States government, in all its wisdom, saw fit to overthrow the democratically elected Salvador Allende and install Augusto Pinochet, one of the most brutal dictators of the modern age, Quilapayun began to protest their newly restricted civil liberties through song. Upon the assassination of several band members, Quilapayun fled to France, where its members continued making music in exile.

Indochine - French Rock

Indochine is a French new wave/rock band formed in 1981. Despite the passage of time, the band has kept a distinct 80s sound giving it a wonderfully anachronistic quality. Indochine has enjoyed success not only in France, but also in the rest of continental Europe.

Soda Stereo - 80's Rock from Argentina

Soda Stereo is a classic Argentine rock trio. The band established what would become the template for many other popular Spanish-speaking pop and rock music groups: clever, often mysterious lyrics, pleasing musical arrangements and an elaborate and glamorous aesthetic image. Soda Stereo has become one of the most critically acclaimed Argentine rock bands.

Música Ligera

The Brazilian band Capital Inicial covered this song, albeit with altered lyrics, under the title A Sua Maneira. Although I strongly prefer the original, the cover was well received in Brazil.

Telek - Papua New Guinean singer

George Mamua Telek is one of the few Papuan New Guinean singers who have gained international fame. He says his songs are about their daily life, songs that people sing when they pick the bananas, collect the coconuts or go fishing. He sings in his native language, Kuanua, and in the English-based creole Tok Pisin.

Páll Finnur Páll is a pop-rock band from Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands. The band started playing as a trio 7 years ago by three students named Páll, Finnur and Páll - hence the name - but three more members have joined since then. They released their first album Bermenn in 2003 and their second album Førist in 2006.

LOVEGUN - Hungarian Rock

Not to be confused with the Kiss album, whence the name was derived, LOVEGUN is one of my all time favourite bands. I actually first came in contact with them through this blog and I decided that they deserved their own post. Their website is http://www.lovegun.hu/. LOVEGUN features intense female lead vocals and guitar riffs.

Mariza - Portuguese Fado

Fado is a music genre which can be traced from the 1820s in Portugal, but probably with much earlier origins. It is characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor. Fado has a very distinct style and generally utilizes a solo female voice on top of a Portuguese Guitar. Mariza is one of my favourite modern Fado singers.

Tleskač - The Pilsner Ska Orchestra!

Hi guys, im sorry for the long time not posting anything. I was busy with some things, I still am, but I plan to post more in the near future again. The fabulous Czech Ska band Tleskac brought me back to my blog :) I've found only live video records on youtube, but they give a great impression too, the only bummer being the sound track of some which seams to be really bad.
See for yourselves:

Their website is absolutely great you can download nearly all their songs and the lyrics are there too. Both thumbs up!

Legen - Croatian folk

LEGEN (Croatia) - ZUMBA
In 1992, Legen was founded by Mojmir Novaković. Novaković is inspired by archaic Croatian music and hybridizes his original compositions with up to date dance beats and ambient soundscapes. His mission is to resurface treasures and wisdom of the past for the present. With a soft spot for symbolic connotations, Legen played their first show during spring equinox 1993. The band organizes festivals for international traditional music and celebrates the wealth of cultures in the world. But Legen doesn’t play music for the head. The encounter of prehistoric wildness, Croatian tradition and massive shamanic drums connects directly with the soul… Since 2002 the band has been on hiatus and Novaković founded his new project, Kries.

Ska Hecc - Hungarian Ska

Ska Hecc - Ugyanonnan ugyanoda
High quality ska rock music from Hungary. Their website is pretty elaborated you can browse an English version of it and get quite some media (video and audio)
For example a high quality version of the video above

As a sidenote, the posts of this month are probably the last ones for quite some time, as I find myself being drafted into the army for 9 months, beginning next month. I don't know how well I can keep up with writing within that period. But this blog however will stay, and eventually some stuff can be posted on the weekends, which will be the only time when I'll be home.

Hungarian Folk - Felix Lajko / Magdolna Ruzsa

This is an hungarian folk song. The zither is played by Felix Lajko, who is an Hungarian violinist and Magdolna Ruzsa accompanies him singing.

Még azt mondják hogy ez se szép az se szép
Olyan vagyok mint a csillagos ég,
de olyan vagyok mint a zengedelem
a két szememből ragyog a szerelem a sötétbe'

Édesanyám vettem egy kalapot
fújja a szél rajta a szalagot
ha nem fújja magam is de lobogtatom
ezt a szőkét ide csalogatom a sötétbe

Sevara Nazarkhan - Uzbek music

Sevara Nazarkhan is an Uzbek singer. She doesn't live in Uzbekistan anymore, though. She lives in London and is working together with Peter Gabriel producing music, which seems to be more profitable than performing in Uzbekistan only. Nevertheless she is a pop star in Uzbekistan.

Kriwi - Belarusian folk rock

Kriwi is a Belarusian folk group that was created in 1996. They use many traditional instruments, they write about it in detail on their website. Unfortunately, I guess it's got something to do with the fact they are signed by a Western label, there is no complete mp3s of their songs online, just some samples. Hugh. So I can just show this video on youtube:

Global Sound - Great database about world music and culture online

As mentioned in the post before, Smithsonian Global Sound has to be mentiones. As far as I can oversee it by now, it's a great site that lets you discover a lot of artists and learn about culture from basically everywhere. Additionally you can buy the music if you like it, yeah ;).
It even allows you to browse their database by a language you like.
I think this site is great I wanted to put a link to it.

Stephen Tsotsi Kasumali - Zambian rock music!

Stephen Tsotsi Kasumali is a singer from Northern Zambia. He, together with William Mapulanga and John Lushi, can be called the the founding fathers of modern Zambian rock music. Unfortunately there's not really a lot online, but I found some samples on smithsonianglobalsound.org and on rhapsody.com (mind, though, that this link only allows you to listen to the sample if your IP address is within US ranges).

Efrat Gosh - Israeli pop music

Efrat Gosh is an Israeli singer producing pop music. She is also featured on the Metropolin album, which is a great source for more Israeli artists, too.

There's only some samples in .wma format on her official website

Barbara Morgenstern - Electronic music from Berlin

Well, she's quite well-known already. But nothing wrong with a small post about her here. Barbara Morgenstern is an electro-pop or call it whatever you want artist from Berlin, Germany.
Below is her song 'Augenblick'

Zóna A - Grandfathers of Slovak Punk Rock

Bratislavske dievcata
I really love Slovakia. This band is one oldest Slovak punk rock bands. It was formed in 1984. During the Communist Regime in the ČSSR they had to play in secret under fake names. About 4 band tapes were circulating at that time. In 1985 there was even a first film made about them but it was never broadcasted because State Television labeled it: "not suitable for communist youth". A year later the band members passports were confiscicated by the secret police to avoid them appearing on a festival of the scene in Poland (JAROCIN). It was not until 1988 when as a result of the whole Perestroika in the Eastern Block the band was first allowed to play on festivals and there were interviews in Newspapers. The state-owned record company OPUS even offered to put out an official record, the band however refused this offer because they did not want to change some disputed lyrics in order to make this deal come true! After 1990 they have also toured some Western European countries, like Austria, Italy, Germany. One if not the most famous Slovak punk rock band of all times :)

Enjoy some videos

Yasmin Levy - Ladino music

Yasmin Levy is an Israeli artist singing in the Ladino language, the language of the Sephardic Jews. Pretty understandable if you've got some knowledge of Spanish or another Romance language. Wonderful tunes, inspired by Flamenco of Andalusia and Arabic and of course Jewish influence. She has already been among the Nominees of BBC World Music Award 2006 in the category 'culture crossing' and this year for Mid East and North Africa. Just follow all the links on BBC there's a lot of music samples, even including a complete concert of her from 2005. Have a listen!

Živé Kvety - Slovak rock

Hehe. Had to do this double post on Slovak music. There's just too much of good stuff there. Živé Kvety is a Slovak alternative rock band. Maybe I should add there's a certain folk and kitsch flavour added to their tunes. It's really interesting. I found to love them really fast. You should just see for yourselves, yeah! They have a lot online, for people like us, far away from where they record or the records are sold.

Rokia Traoré - Malaian Contemporary Music

Rokia Traoré is a Malaian singer, song-writer and guitarist. She was born in 1974 in the Bambara ethnic group. Her father was a diplomat, thus enabling her to 'get around' quite a bit, due to his work. She always used to sing and when her father was stationed in Brussels she began to perform publically. She was given an award by Radio France as 'African Discovery of the Year' in 1997.

Unfortunately there's no streaming media online, to be linked here, you will have to browse her official website. There are some samples, sadly no complete songs. But then, buying albums like these is never bad and you will support actual musicians.
